Simple Mistakes That Make Your Phone Less Secure

Simple Mistakes That Make Your Phone Less Secure #Having lousy password habits Passwords are not impenetrable, but they definitely add a serious layer of protection against having your data stolen. But most people have the worst password habits. Some of the biggest password blunders include: Using weak passwords (think guy who uses “password” as their password to be ironic, it’s not ironic, it’s just dumb) Using the same password for several accounts (if a hacker gets into one account, they’ve got them all) Saving passwords as a note on your phone (here, please take my passwords!) Solution: The obvious solution for these mistakes is to choose strong passwords, different for each account, and never save them on a note on your phone. Use a password manager if you just can’t remember them all, or use a protected doc if you absolutely must have a list written down. #Hackers’ Favorite Mistake #: Hopping onto public WiFi Public WiFi used to be a smartphone user’s best friend. ...

Orbiter confirms methane ‘spike’ on Mars (and it could be a sign of aliens)

Every time NASA makes an announcement about Mars , an army of UFO fans jumps the gun and assumes it’s going to be little green men or at the very least alien microbes. But a Mars orbiter has confirmed the Curiosity Rover’s famous discovery of methane gas – a chemical linked to life. Now scientists believe they might know where it came from . Analysis of data from the Mars Express orbiter shows that there was one ‘spike’ of methane gas – and it may have come from beneath the ground, perhaps from melting permafrost. This does not mean, of course, that there definitely are flatulent aliens on the Red Planet – but it’s a potential sign that Mars once had conditions suitable for life, or that microbes once existed there. Family tracking app leaked real-time location data for weeks

Family tracking apps  can be very helpful if you're worried about your kids or spouse, but they can be nightmarish if that data falls into the wrong hands. Security researcher Sanyam Jain has  revealed  to  TechCrunch  that React Apps' Family Locator left real-time location data (plus other sensitive personal info) for over 238,000 people exposed for weeks in an insecure database. It showed positions within a few feet, and even showed the names for the geofenced areas used to provide alerts. You could tell if parents left home or a child arrived at school, for instance. This wasn't helped by React's own issues with accountability. Its site had no contact information, and even its WHOIS record masked the email address. Messages through the feedback form turned up nothing. The database didn't go offline until  TechCrunch  asked Microsoft to reach the developer, who still hasn't said anything about the leak. It's not clear if anyone be...
