Captain Marvel' Is Soaring Past $300M Domestic And $850M Worldwide (Box Office)

In holdover news for Friday,  Captain Marvel  earned another $9.226 million (-51%) on its third Friday to bring its cume up to $295.7m. It has passed the unadjusted domestic gross of  Man of Steel  ($291m in 2013) and will pass $300m domestic today. Barring a fluke in either direction, the MCU flick should earn another $35m (-48%) this weekend to bring its 17-day cume up to $321m. That's a slightly bigger drop than the 45% fall I was expecting, but  Us  is proving to be a super-duper powerhouse. Nonetheless, the Brie Larson flick will end the weekend above the unadjusted grosses of  Iron Man 2  ($312 million in 2010),  Thor: Ragnarok  ($315m in 2017) and  Iron Man  ($318m in 2008). The film has earned over $140m in China toward its current $539m overseas cume. We can expect a worldwide total of well over $860m (past  Thor: Ragnarok  and  Venom ) and possibly over  Spider-Man 3  ($890m).

Tea Study Reveals Unexpected Risks Due to Drinking "Very Hot Beverages"

T he way you take your  tea  feels like a matter of life or death. Some like sugar, others take it with milk, while some prefer  artificial sweeteners  that could  alter the microbiome . Temperature is a key factor, too: If you take it excruciatingly hot, the results of a new  International Journal of Cancer  study has some sobering news to report. This  study   on 50,045 individuals from the Northeast Region of Iran found strong ties between drinking at least 700 milliliters of tea beyond 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit) per day and an esophageal cancer called a squamous cell carcinoma. That type of cancer typically infects the cells that line the upper and middle sections of esophagus and only made up  one percent of new cancer cases  in the United States in 2018. Drinking a lot of very hot tea on a regular basis, the authors reports, increased the risk of esophageal cancer in their study population by  90 percent .  Dr. Farhard Islami , the strategic director of Ca

Family tracking app leaked real-time location data for weeks

Family tracking apps  can be very helpful if you're worried about your kids or spouse, but they can be nightmarish if that data falls into the wrong hands. Security researcher Sanyam Jain has  revealed  to  TechCrunch  that React Apps' Family Locator left real-time location data (plus other sensitive personal info) for over 238,000 people exposed for weeks in an insecure database. It showed positions within a few feet, and even showed the names for the geofenced areas used to provide alerts. You could tell if parents left home or a child arrived at school, for instance. This wasn't helped by React's own issues with accountability. Its site had no contact information, and even its WHOIS record masked the email address. Messages through the feedback form turned up nothing. The database didn't go offline until  TechCrunch  asked Microsoft to reach the developer, who still hasn't said anything about the leak. It's not clear if anyone beyond J

Smoking strong pot daily raises psychosis risk, study finds

LONDON (AP) — Smoking high-potency marijuana every day could increase the chances of developing psychosis by nearly five times, according to the biggest-ever study to examine the impact of pot on psychotic disorder rates. The research adds to previous studies that have found links between marijuana and mental health problems, but still does not definitively pinpoint marijuana as the cause. Psychotic disorders — in which people lose touch with reality — are typically triggered by factors including genetics and the environment. But experts say the new study’s findings have implications for jurisdictions legalizing marijuana, warning they should consider the potential impact on their mental health services. “If we think there’s something particular about (high-potency) cannabis, then making that harder to get a hold of, could be a useful harm-reduction measure,” said Suzanne Gage, of the University of Liverpool, who was not connected to the new study. Researchers at King’s C

Facebook: Our AI failed to catch the New Zealand shooter video

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern speaks to the house at Parliament on March 19, 2019 in Wellington, New Zealand. London (CNN) Facebook acknowledges its systems failed to catch the livestream video of the New Zealand mosque attack, shedding new light on how the company became aware of the video. In a  blog post late Wednesday evening  the social media company's vice president of integrity, Guy Rosen, wrote that the shooter's video did not trigger Facebook's automatic detection systems because its artificial intelligence did not have enough training to recognize that type of video. The shooter livestreamed 17 minutes of the horrific attack -- which left 50 people dead -- on Facebook. Facebook said when the video was live, fewer than 200 people watched it. The video was later viewed 4,000 times before Facebook took it down. The company hasn't said exactly when it removed the shooter's video. Since the attack, the video has been downloaded and re-uploaded

Google's Stadia Cloud Gaming Platform Is A Very Different PS4/Xbox One Competitor

Google has formally revealed its plans for a  video game streaming platform called Stadia , offering games on demand streamed through the cloud. Stadia is planned for launch this year and allows you to stream games across a variety of devices with very little friction. It could be a  very big deal  for gaming going forward. The platform aims to bring together playing, spectating, and developing games onto a single platform. As an example, you could view Assassin's Creed Odyssey on YouTube and then begin playing it through streaming in "as little as five seconds." Things like game updates and patches and system requirements are effectively a non-issue, because the game is running on Google's servers, rather than your local device. Google VP Phil Harrison promised the technology will work across desktops, laptops, TV, tablets, and phones. In a demonstration, the same demo was seen working across a Chromebook, smartphone, tablet, and TV, the latter through a Chromec
